Baby Lifeline Training in 2022

Delivering courses far and wide

In 2022 we delivered 72 training courses for maternity professionals including midwives, MSWs, obstetricians, paramedics, anaesthetists, obstetrician physicians and GPs. This equates to 101 days of learning, or more than 600 hours of CPD that we provided! More than 3,600 delegates attended our courses in 2022.

Around half of our study days took place online and half were face to face. Our team travelled (almost!) the length and breadth of England, delivering face to face courses in places such as Norwich, Blackpool, Gateshead, the Isle of Wight, and everywhere in between. We also took our Childbirth Emergencies in the Community course on tour, travelling to Dublin in November to deliver two days of learning to midwives and paramedics from across the Republic of Ireland.

Our online courses had an even wider reach, with delegates from Malta, Austria, Iceland and Jersey joining colleagues from as far afield as Cornwall, Inverness, Kilkenny, Canterbury and the Brecon Beacons in undertaking study days.

NHS England invested in our training in 2022: they provided more than £150,000 to fund places on our Learning from Adverse Events and Healthcare Incident Investigation courses.

Our courses in 2022

Our most frequently-run study day was our Childbirth Emergencies in the Community course. This was delivered a whopping 22 times in 2022! Our CTG Masterclass also took place eleven times, and we ran nine Developing ‘Human Factors’ Skills courses across the year.

Our new Improving Outcomes for Those with Comorbidities in Pregnancy course took place three times in 2022, following its pilot at the end of 2021. This course covers topics such as stroke, epilepsy, obesity and diabetes, and has become increasingly popular.

We also covered new ground with the launch of our Delivering Excellence in Perinatal Mental Health course, which teaches delegates to develop skills in identifying and interacting effectively with women with perinatal mental health problems and how/when to appropriately escalate. We are looking forward to delivering both courses again in 2023.

New in 2022

Behind the scenes, a big project for Baby Lifeline Training in 2022 was developing and investing in our Childbirth Emergencies in the Community course. The team worked with Course Directors Clara Haken and Michelle Keeler to develop new materials based on recent research regarding out-of-hospital births. We then met with our brilliant facilitator team in Birmingham in June for a Train the Trainers day to workshop the course.

We purchased new simulation equipment including two neonatal resuscitation babies (full-term and premature), dolls and pelvises, and a venipuncture arm. The feedback from the revamped course so far has been excellent, and we are excited to deliver this course to delegates again in 2023.

Our Course Directors’ hard work was recognised at our National Maternity Safety Conference in September, as Clara and Michelle were presented with Chief Midwifery Officer Silver Awards by Professor Jacqueline Dunkley Bent, Chief Midwifery Officer for England.

Thank you to our faculty!

We’re so grateful to the hard work of our faculty – new and existing – and so we want to say a huge thank you to those that have joined us to facilitate in 2022. We welcomed several new faculty members to our teams, including many brilliant paramedics, midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists, psychiatrists and physicians. We couldn’t do what we do without you, and we can’t wait to work with you all again in 2023!

We’re always on the lookout for great facilitators – if you’re interested in joining our faculty then please get in touch.

In 2023…

All of our courses are based on best practice and cutting-edge research, so we are constantly reviewing and developing them. We have exciting developments planned for some of our existing study days, as well as exciting new courses in the pipeline. Watch this space!

Thank you so much to all faculty, delegates, student volunteers, advisory panels and our training team for helping us to do what we do.
