This course provides evidence-based training in CTG interpretation grounded in fetal physiology and the pathophysiology of intrapartum hypoxic injury. It aims to enhance clinicians’ ability to recognise fetal compromise, reduce the risk of hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), and minimise unnecessary operative interventions, supporting safer outcomes for both mothers and babies.

This two-day course will enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in assessing risk to both the woman and fetus during labour. Using the principles of fetal physiology and the pathophysiology of intrapartum hypoxia, delegates will learn to interpret CTG traces within the context of the whole clinical picture, enabling a better understanding of how an individual baby is responding to the stresses of labour. This deeper understanding supports more accurate CTG interpretation and timely, appropriate escalation of concerns regarding fetal wellbeing.
Building on the Foundation CTG Masterclass, this advanced course explores more complex clinical scenarios and provides a greater depth of learning, discussion, and reflection. As such, participants should have a basic understanding of physiological CTG interpretation before attending.

CTG Train the Leaders is designed to equip CTG Leads, Practice Development Midwives, Obstetricians, and senior maternity professionals with the advanced knowledge, educational skills, and leadership capabilities required to lead fetal monitoring practice within their organisations. The course enables delegates to champion physiological CTG interpretation, support multidisciplinary learning, drive quality improvement, and promote a culture of safety and reflective practice. It is important that Trusts and Integrated Care Boards support their nominated CTG Leads to undertake this training, ensuring they are well equipped to provide expert guidance, deliver high-quality education, and promote the consistent application of evidence-based fetal monitoring across maternity services.
A good existing knowledge of fetal physiology is compulsory for this course.
