The Need For Training

Labour Ward Coordinators are central to creating safe, effective maternity environments, leading multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining high standards of care. Despite the complexity and critical nature of the LWC role, there has historically been no nationally recognised development pathway. National reviews repeatedly identify communication, escalation and leadership as key areas for improvement in reducing avoidable harm.

The Baby Lifeline Labour Ward Coordinators: Communication & Leadership course directly responds to these national recommendations and requirements by equipping coordinators with the skills to:

  • lead safely and decisively in complex clinical environments
  • escalate concerns appropriately and without delay
  • communicate effectively with both multidisciplinary teams and service users
  • foster a culture of openness, safety and collaboration

At a time when maternity services face increasing scrutiny, rising complexity and strong national focus on safety and accountability, structured and bespoke training for those leading labour wards is essential. It also assists Trusts in demonstrating delivery of national actions, strengthens compliance with national safety recommendations and supports a safer and more collaborative maternity workforce. It can be used by Trusts to demonstrate compliance with national action plans and meeting the requirements of the Labour Ward Co-ordinator education framework.

Aims of the Course

To strengthen the communication and leadership capabilities of Labour Ward Coordinators, enabling them to lead safely and confidently, foster effective and psychologically safe teamwork, support service users and colleagues with compassion, and manage complex clinical situations through clear, structured communication and effective, proactive leadership behaviours.

Enhancing this Training Course
Our Communication & Leadership course gives Labour Ward Coordinators the skills to lead teams, navigate emergencies, and support families with clarity and confidence. Pairing it with our Resilience, Resourcefulness & Wellbeing course strengthens those skills even further by helping coordinators stay calm, grounded, and effective under pressure.

Together, these courses provide a powerful, complementary development pathway: one builds the essential leadership and communication tools needed on a busy labour ward, while the other strengthens the emotional wellbeing, self-awareness, and coping strategies that make those tools sustainable in real-world practice. This combined approach supports safer decision-making, healthier teams, and more compassionate care in the most challenging moments.

The Labour Ward Coordinator course can also be delivered as a half-day focussing on communication only.

DELEGATE FEEDBACK

“Very useful and informative course […] essential for labour ward coordinators to build up leadership skills as we don’t always have the opportunity to be trained.”
