The need for Training
Women and birthing people have the legal right to make decisions about their body whilst pregnant, during labour and postnatally, just as they do at any other time (Birthrights). In the Supreme Court case Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board (2015), the court specified that discussion of risk between patients and healthcare professionals must be personalised and honest, and the patient must be fully informed of the risks and benefits of a procedure or treatment in order to be able to make informed decisions about their care.
Research shows that 4-5% of women that give birth develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Yildiz, Ayers and Phillips, 2017), and themes relating to good communication, informed consent and listening are among the most important things healthcare providers can do to prevent a traumatic experience during childbirth (Hollander et al, 2017).
Nevertheless, a key theme identified by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Birth Trauma in their 2024 report was a lack of informed consent: “women frequently felt they were subjected to interventions they had not consented to, and many felt they had not been given enough information to make decisions during birth.” The report recommendations include mandatory training for maternity professionals in trauma-informed care and communicating risk.
