Need for training
Recent national data published by MBRRACE-UK demonstrates that maternal mortality in the UK remains a significant concern. Between 2022 and 2024, the overall maternal death rate was 20% higher than in 2009-11, with persistent inequalities for Black women, women living in areas of deprivation, and those with complex medical, social or mental health needs. Thrombosis, cardiac disease and mental health conditions remain major contributors to maternal mortality.
National reviews continue to highlight the need for earlier recognition of deterioration, effective escalation, multidisciplinary teamworking and compassionate, person-centred care. The Independent Review of Maternity Services at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (2026) and the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation (2026) identified recurring concerns relating to listening to women and families, staffing pressures, clinical decision-making, safety culture and the consistent delivery of safe care.
Women accessing maternity services continue to present with increasingly complex health needs. National Enhanced Maternal Care guidance emphasises that women who become acutely unwell must have prompt access to appropriately skilled staff, enhanced monitoring and timely intervention, regardless of care setting. Healthcare professionals therefore require the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise deterioration, initiate appropriate management and provide safe enhanced maternal care.

Members of the maternity and acute care teams who may be involved in the recognition and management of acutely unwell maternity patients, including: Midwives, Obstetricians, Nurses and Trainees in Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine and Anaesthesia.
Course Objectives and Content
Delivered via lectures, workstations, and group-discussions in a multi-professional environment, this pertinent one-day course aims to enhance delegate knowledge and confidence in the physiology, early recognition and management of the acutely unwell mother.
Following completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply learning from recent reviews of maternal mortality and morbidity, including MBRRACE-UK findings and the experiences of women who have been critically unwell during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
- Discuss current standards and guidance relevant to Enhanced Maternal Care and the management of the acutely unwell maternity patient.
- Recognise the impact of human factors on the safe and effective care of deteriorating women and apply principles that support effective multidisciplinary teamworking.
- Identify, assess, manage and escalate care appropriately for women showing signs of clinical deterioration, including those presenting with breathlessness, chest pain and headache.

Recognise the importance of effective communication, escalation and advocacy, including responding to concerns raised by women, families and staff and applying the principles underpinning Martha’s Rule.
- Recognise and initiate management of maternal sepsis in accordance with current best practice.
- Perform and interpret key clinical assessments relevant to the deteriorating maternity patient, including neurological assessment, basic airway assessment and management, arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation, and ECG interpretation.
- Apply principles of safe and effective fluid assessment and management in women who are acutely unwell.
- Describe the indications, benefits and limitations of invasive monitoring and its role in the care of women requiring enhanced maternal care or high-dependency support.
- Demonstrate increased confidence in the practical skills and clinical decision-making required to safely care for women with complex or deteriorating conditions.
