Overview
This course is designed to support medical professionals in delivering effective and equitable care to patients with limited English proficiency. Language barriers can impede communication, reduce patient trust, and compromise the quality of care. The most recent MBRRACE report (NPEU, 2024) highlights that birthing people with language barriers disproportionately receive poor care that contributes to adverse outcomes. By building skills to navigate these challenges, the course empowers healthcare providers to foster inclusion, improve understanding, and enhance patient outcomes.
Course Objectives
The course will focus on:
- Understanding the impact of language barriers: Exploring how communication gaps affect patient safety, experience, and outcomes.
- Building effective communication skills: Training participants to use plain language visual aids, and non-verbal cues to facilitate understanding.
- Utilising interpreters effectively: Providing best practices for working with professional interpreters, including remote and in-person services.
- Promoting patient empowerment: Developing strategies to ensure patients feel heard respected, and involved in their care decisions.
Structure and Delivery
The course will include interactive sessions, practical exercises, and role-play scenarios that simulate real-life situations. Participants will practice using interpreter services and alternative communication tools to build confidence and competence. Delivery can be online or face-to-face: when delivered alongside Building Informed Care to Support Migrant, Refugee, and Asylum-Seeking Women
Expected Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will:
