To inform delegates of evidence-based best practice in identifying and managing comorbidities in pregnancy.
Though the UK is a comparatively safe place to give birth, the latest MBRRACE‑UK data shows that in 2022-24 the overall rate of maternal death in the UK was 20% higher than it was in 2009-11 when the government set an ambition to halve the rate of maternal mortality in England. The maternal death rate remains higher than pre‑pandemic levels and continues to reflect worrying trends in preventable harm.
The newest data confirms that clinical comorbidities remain a major driver of preventable maternal deaths. Venous thromboembolism remains the leading cause of maternal death, followed by heart disease, with many women experiencing multiple overlapping medical and social risk factors that complicate care.
At the same time, inequalities persist: Black women are more than twice as likely to die as white women, and mortality rates are almost double for women living in the most deprived areas. NHS England’s Maternal Care Bundle for reducing mortality and morbidity highlights that maternal care is becoming increasingly complex due to rising maternal age, obesity, and long‑term health conditions. MBRRACE-UK found that improvements in care could have changed the outcome for 45% of women who died between 2021–2023.
High‑quality, up‑to‑date training on comorbidities is therefore critical to help clinicians recognise risk earlier, manage complex needs effectively, and deliver safer, more equitable maternity care.
