COURSE DELIVERY AND CERTIFICATION

One half-day of training

Timings: 09:00-13:00

4 hours relevant for CPD

RELEVANT FOR

This course is relevant for midwives, nurses, obstetricians and other professionals from the wider holistic health community that interact with women, birthing people and families during pregnancy and postnatally.

ABOUT THIS HALF-DAY WORKSHOP

This course is designed to support medical professionals in delivering effective and equitable care to patients with limited English proficiency. Language barriers can impede communication, reduce patient trust, and compromise the quality of care. The most recent MBRRACE report (NPEU, 2024) highlights that birthing people with language barriers disproportionately receive poor care that contributes to adverse outcomes. By building skills to navigate these challenges, the course empowers healthcare providers to foster inclusion, improve understanding, and enhance patient outcomes.

The course focuses on:

  • Understanding the impact of language barriers.
  • Building effective communication skills.
  • Utilising interpreters effectively.
  • Promoting patient empowerment.

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Better communicate with patients despite language barriers.
  • Confidently integrate interpreter services into clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate humanised, patient-centred care that prioritises understanding and trust.

The course will include interactive sessions, practical exercises, and role-play scenarios that simulate real-life situations. Participants will practice using interpreter services and alternative communication tools to build confidence and competence.
