Baby Lifeline Training in 2024

It’s been another exciting year for Baby Lifeline Training as we developed brand new courses, travelled the country delivering training, and met lots of brilliant delegates and faculty. Here are a few highlights from 2024…

Childbirth Emergencies in the Community was our most frequently delivered training course again this year.

We trained over 2500 delegates in 2024!

We delivered 68 training courses covering 20 different topics to 2500 delegates across the UK and further afield. This equates to over 100 days of learning, and marks an increase since 2023 when we ran 53 courses in 15 topics. This year we have trained delegates from all four devolved nations, and delivered in-person courses as far and wide as Dublin, Newcastle, Glasgow, Kent, Norwich and Cumbria. In our online courses, we welcomed delegates from countries in Europe and Africa to learn together with UK-based healthcare professionals.

The course we delivered most often again this year was Childbirth Emergencies in the Community. This course ran 17 times in-person to delegates across the UK and in the Republic of Ireland! Meanwhile, more than 850 delegates developed their skills in CTG interpretation via our CTG Masterclass and Advanced CTG Masterclass in 2024.

New developments for Baby Lifeline Training

This year we relaunched two courses: Implementing Saving Babies’ Lives: Preterm Matters (which provides the evidence-base and context for the prediction, prevention, and perinatal optimisation for preterm birth), and Preparing, Protecting and Repairing the Perineum (a mixed-methods hands-on practical and interactive teaching refresher course). Both courses ran three times this year and will be returning in 2025.

“We do care about prematurity!” We developed five new courses this year, including Implementing Saving Babies’ Lives: Preterm Matters.

We also ran a CTG Masterclass: Train the Leaders course in early 2024. The course brought together thirty delegates from across the UK to discuss creative and impactful ways of teaching physiological CTG interpretation. The course included teaching strategies, medico-legal perspectives, and strategies for implementing change.

In October we piloted our brand new Informed Consent in Maternity Services: Putting it into Practice course. The course covers the change in law on consent, legal perspectives, best practice, practical tips, trauma-informed consent, and equity in consent. The course will be running again next year and is available to book now.

Delegates on our Governance, Assurance and Improving Quality and Safety in Your Maternity and Neonatal Services: Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnerships (MNVPs) course complete the training course by presenting to the prestigious Baby Lifeline Training “Board.”

We also developed our Governance, Assurance and Improving Quality and Safety in Your Maternity Services course for Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnerships (MNVPs). This was commissioned by North East and North Cumbria ICB and involved both online and in-person learning.

An exciting development for Baby Lifeline in 2024 has been developing our virtual learning hub for our online and hybrid courses. Delegates can now work through content in their own time, complete tasks, and utilise networking opportunities. This is something we will be growing further in 2025!

Our impact

An important part of our work is making sure that our courses are always up-to-date, relevant and impactful. We take feedback from our pre- and post-course surveys seriously, and are always redeveloping and improving what we do.

This year, nine out of ten delegates told us that the quality of our courses was “very good” or “excellent,” and nine in ten also told us that they plan to change their practice in a major or minor way following our training. We also ask delegates to provide feedback three months after attending our courses. They told us:

• My practice is far more informed… I always followed guidelines but now feel I understand where they come from and the underlying processes I am supporting. (Childbirth Emergencies in the Community)
• I have managed to organize my team better should imminent delivery be required while monitoring the labour. (CTG Masterclass)
• I feel a lot more motivated to seek out inequalities in the workplace. I have set up a project that looks into all aspects of equality and fairness in the workplace and have requested funding for all maternity staff to attend this course. (Cultural Competency & Safety Workshop)
