Overview

These workshops are designed to address disparities in care delivery, foster a culture of inclusion, and improve patient outcomes by exploring the relationship between individual values, biases, and behaviours. The workshops will prioritise a values alignment methodology, an innovative approach that has been shown to support sustainable behaviour change by encouraging participants to explore and align their personal values with professional conduct.

The Need for Training

Bias in clinical practice, particularly against marginalised groups, remains a critical issue in healthcare, contributing to disparities in care quality, patient outcomes, and overall patient satisfaction (Knight et al., 2023). Through targeted interventions that help staff recognise and manage their own unconscious biases, organisations can achieve more equitable and compassionate care.

Content

The workshops will centre on interactive and engagement-heavy activities designed to:

  • Identify individual biases using reflective activities and real case studies, participants will explore how unconscious biases emerge in behaviours and decisions, particularly in care provision.
  • Align values with behaviours by use of clarification exercises (Mickleburgh, 1992), this will help participants reduce dissonance between their personal and professional values, enabling them to adopt a more values-driven approach in their roles.
  • Develop actionable strategies with focused segments of the workshop reflecting on their learning, participants will develop strategies to approach future situations with greater cultural civility and sensitivity.
Aims and Objectives

The workshops aim to:

  • Enhance staff self-awareness and cultural safety through values clarification.
  • Reduce unconscious biases that contribute to health inequities.
  • Improve staff confidence in delivering equitable, patient-centred care.
  • Strengthen team cohesion and alignment with organisational values around diversity, inclusion, and quality care.

After gaining a deeper understanding of the barriers to healthcare and types of discrimination faced by people from racialised communities, participants will be supported to reflect upon and analyse their own practice. They will then create individual action plans and leave with a clear idea of how they want to take this knowledge forward into their own work and professions.

Relevant For

This workshop is relevant for all members of the maternity team including midwives, nurses, MSWs, obstetricians, anaesthetists, and professionals from the wider holistic health community. The activities are tailored to the skills and professional roles of the group to ensure an engaging and pragmatic approach.
