
A senior consultant paediatric ophthalmologist at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) since 2002. He received advanced paediatric ophthalmology training at MREH, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, and King’s College Hospital, London.
The MREH is the second largest teaching hospital for ophthalmology in the United Kingdom and is a major tertiary and quaternary referral unit taking on complex paediatric ophthalmology cases from all over the North of England. Professor Biswas is the clinical lead of the Paediatric Eye Unit at the MREH with a team of five consultant paediatric ophthalmologists and 2 paediatric ophthalmology fellows. Prof. Biswas provides a quaternary referral service for paediatric allergic eye disease and paediatric corneal and external eye disease.
Professor Biswas was the Clinical Head of Division for Ophthalmology at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (2012-2018). He is the current Chair of the Paediatric Subcommittee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and sits on the executive committee of the British and Irish Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association (BIPOSA).
He has authored and co-authored many articles and guidelines in the field of paediatric ophthalmology in peer reviewed learned journals and has presented, authored and co-authored many papers at national and international scientific meetings. In addition to this he has written chapters in textbooks of paediatric ophthalmology and articles for optometry journals on a variety of aspects of paediatric ophthalmology.
He is frequently invited platform speaker at many national and international meetings including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, BIPOSA, World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS), European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) and European Paediatric Ophthalmology Society (EPOS)
He is the lead for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Screening and Treatment for the Greater Manchester Region and his research includes Retinopathy of Prematurity, where he is a principal investigator and Sub principal investigator for several studies and has pioneered neonatal nurse delivered ROP screening using digital wide angle retinal camera systems.
Professor Biswas has also been awarded an Honorary Chair position for the Manchester Academy of Health Sciences (MAHSC), University of Manchester.
