Those who attend planned or unplanned births in all clinical settings, such as midwives, student midwives, practice development midwives, obstetricians (ST1 & ST2) and labour ward leads who will facilitate skill sharing with colleagues.

 

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

To provide a mixed-methods hands-on practical and interactive teaching day that offers clear guidelines and builds confidence in important elements of preparing, protecting, and repairing the perineum.

 

COURSE CONTENT

The one day course will cover antenatal consultation and preparation, minimizing risk of tearing during birth (following evidence-based guidance from the OASI Care Bundle), and post-natal follow-up, as well as practical hands-on suturing.

Using a combination of formal talks, workshops, discussions and hands-on learning the following topics will be covered:

  • Suturing of wounds – a historical perspective
  • Anatomy of the pelvic floor
  • The OASI Care Bundle – background, findings and recommendations
  • Suturing (hands-on)
    • Left-handed teaching and troubleshooting is available
  • Post-natal care and long-term pelvic health
