This course is relevant for all health professionals who work in maternity and neonatal care, those that support women and birthing people in decision-making, and clinical negligence lawyers

 

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

  • To understand the law on consent and how it applies to maternity care.
  • To build confidence in having discussions with women and birthing people (both antenatally
    and in an emergency) which support informed decision making.
  • To gain an understanding of trauma-informed consent.
  • Learn how to support women and birthing people in decision-making.
  • To build confidence in how to have effective discussions with refugee, asylum seeking and
    undocumented migrant women and birthing people which support informed decision
    making.

 

COURSE CONTENT

Using a combination of formal talks and interactive discussions the following topics are covered:

    • The change in law on consent
    • Best practice in consent from a legal perspective
    • Consent in an emergency
    • Trauma-informed consent
    • Supporting women and birthing people with decision-making
    • Equity in consent
    • Opportunities to ask experts and discuss real-life cases
