Ruth-Anna Macqueen is a Senior Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology working in North East London, currently at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust. Ruth-Anna’s primary areas of interest are high risk obstetrics, risk management, human factors, optimising womens’ experience and improving the wellbeing of staff, in particular after involvement in adverse events.
Ruth-Anna took a year out of training from April 2018 as one the first cohort of maternity safety investigators at the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch, where she continued to work until July this year, combining it with her clinical work and training. As part of this she received in-depth training in human factors and investigation techniques from Cranfield University. During her time at HSIB Ruth-Anna interviewed over 100 maternity professionals as part of incident investigations across England and wrote in-depth human factors focussed reports giving recommendations. She is currently undertaking an MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors at the University of Edinburgh.
Ruth-Anna sits on the national Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists National Trainees’ Committee and the BMA’s Junior Doctors’ Committee where she also Co-Chairs the Less Than Full Time Training Forum. Outside of work Ruth-Anna is a busy community activist, volunteer and campaigner, and runs a number of projects encouraging families to get active by incorporating cycling into their day to day lives. Ruth-Anna has three children aged 8, 6 and 3.
